Kate Garraway reveals husband Derek Draper is back in hospital following long Covid battle – Leicestershire Live

Kate Garraway has revealed that her husband, Derek Draper, is back in hospital. The Good Morning Britain presenter shared the news about his condition during an appearance at the TRIC Awards on Wednesday, July 6, although she didn’t open up on why he had returned.

Speaking to The Sun, she said: “He’s OK, he’s back in hospital actually, so that’s a development. There we are. I don’t know what I can say.” The breakfast show host also spoke highly of their two children, 16-year-old Darcey and 12-year-old Billy, adding: “They’ve been amazing – all the way through,” the Mirror reports.

Derek fell seriously ill with Covid-19 in March 2020 and spent a year in intensive care. The 54-year-old former political adviser is now free of the virus, but continues to suffer from long-lasting damage to his organs and requires round-the-clock care at home.

Derek’s condition after Covid is so bad that Kate previously admitted that if Derek was left unaided for three days in a row, he could die. Kate is currently caring for Derek herself and has insisted that she will never give up on the hopes that he will return to full health.

Derek’s health journey and how it impacted his family was explored in two documentaries: Finding Derek and Caring for Derek. The formal political advisor still requires constant care at home. Kate has been there to support her husband throughout the difficult time and has continued to share updates on him.

Earlier this week Kate revealed her husband had lost his medical supplies in the back of a cab. Taking to social media on Friday (July 1), she begged her followers for advice after her taxi mishap, posting on Twitter: “@BC_Lostproperty help!! Have just brought Derek home in a mobility black cab from hospital for a weekend visit. I have left a case with all his meds and kit in the front. The driver recognised me but may not know it’s there – please look and get in touch – need urgently!!”

A couple of days after the incident, Kate updated fans on the situation as many were left concerned by her original tweet and sent messages of well wishes to the 55-year-old. She said thanks to the help of a loyal fan, her husband’s medication was returned to them.

Luckily, the fan knew the cab driver who dropped off Kate and her husband and got in touch with the TV presenter after seeing her plea on Twitter. At the time, the helpful fan messaged her saying: “I know the driver Kate as he mentioned he’d taken you and your husband to me this evening. I’m trying to get in touch right now.”

On Monday morning, July 4, Kate shared her thanks to the fan for all their hard work and dedication in retrieving Derek’s medication, as well as everyone else who got in contact. She wrote: “It’s been returned! Thanks to all who reached out – the message got to driver lovely Robert who has returned it – phew and thanks to all.”
